Meet the Staff

Tim Hawkes



Where were you born? Where have you lived since then?
I was born in Franklin Square, New York. I have lived in New York City and currently reside in Westport, CT.

Educational Background/Past Work Experience:
B.A. in Food Industry Management- Cornell University, NY Co-Founder and President of SmartDemo, Inc., Executive Vice President of Time Inc. In-Store Marketing, Managing member of Hawke Mountain Ventures, LLC, President of The Mountain Workshop / Trailmark Outdoor Adventures.

Greatest Accomplishments/Capstone Experience:
An avid outdoorsman, with interests in sailing, skiing, backpacking, golfing, fly-fishing, nature photography, cycling, and organic gardening.

Why do you work for TMW?
I truly understand the benefits of experiential education, not only for children but also in the corporate world. TMW gives me the opportunity to facilitate and educate in an environment that I truly love.

Next Big Adventure:
Heading out to Colorado to surf the backcountry for fresh powdery runs with my son.

Ben Loveless



Where were you born? Where have you lived since then?
I was born in Bridgeport, CT. Over the past 10 years I have lived in Arizona, California, and Colorado. I have now settled in Fairfield County in the town of Bethel, CT.

Educational Background/Past Work Experience:
B.A. in Environmental Education & Wilderness Leadership-Prescott College, AZ Ben has lead mountaineering trips in the Sierra Nevada, climbing trips in Joshua Tree National Park, sea-kayaking trips in the San Juan Islands, long distance backpacking trips in the Southwest, and has been educating many people outdoors for the past 5 years.

Greatest Accomplishments/Capstone Experience:
Living in Yellowstone National Park for 5 weeks studying the reintroduction of the Mexican Gray Wolf. Also in 2003, leading a climbing party up the east buttress of Mt. Whitney, CA.

Why do you work for TMW?
After many years as a field instructor, I decided to dive deeper into the outdoor education industry. At TMW I have the opportunity to train and teach many people who are coming into this exciting field as well as develop new program options to cater to a more diverse mountain workshop audience.

Next Big Adventure:
Attempt a big peak (at least for me!) Aconcagua in Argentina & Orizaba in Mexico.

Wilderness First Responder(Instructor Trainer)-SOLO, Top Rope Site Manager-AMGA, Leave No Trace Instructor Trainer-LNT, Waterfront Lifeguard-ARC, CPR for the Professional Rescuer-ARC

Michelle Powers



Where were you born? Where have you lived since then?
I was born in Massachusetts, and grew up in Alabama, New York and have lived in Connecticut for the last 15 years.

Educational Background/Past Work Experience:
B.S. in Physical Education- SUNY Cortland, NY I have been involved in Adventure Education for over 20 years in some form or another. I have worked as a Sports Center Director, Senior Program Director, Aquatics and Health Promotion, an Outdoor Adventure Consultant, and as an Aquatics Operations Supervisor.

Greatest Accomplishments/Capstone Experience:
Hiking in South Iceland in the Fjallabak region, hut to hut, through a landscape of lakes, rivers, volcanic fissures, craters, lava flows and canyons.

Why do you work for TMW?
Being in this field for many years has proven to me that outdoor education is beneficial and a very much needed part of life. At TMW I have the opportunity to have such a positive impact on so many people through experiential education.

Jess Barry




Where were you born? Where have you lived since then?
I was born in Freehold, New Jersey, and moved to Connecticut 20 years ago and have called it home ever since.

Educational Background/past work experience:
B.A. in Sociology from Quinnipiac University and have begun my graduate work in Experiential Education through the National Outdoor Leadership School in congruence with the University of Utah. I worked as the Summer Programs Office Manager and Aquatics Director for Cheshire Academy for 7 years.

Greatest Accomplishments/capstone experiences:
Living in the backcountry of the Wind River Range in WY and Utah Canyon Lands for 94 days while on my Outdoor Educator Course. Traveling to Bamako, Mali to see the amazing work a close friend and Peace Corp volunteer. Behind the clouds of red dust kicked up off the city streets I found a community of welcoming and friendly people, beautiful landscapes with world class climbing, and lots of donkeys.

Why do you work for TMW?
As a former participant of the Mountain Workshop school programs I found it only fitting for me to find my way back. I feel that it is important to continue education outside of the brick and mortar classroom and into the environment.

John Gibson


Where were you born? Where have you lived since then?
I was born in Columbia, Missouri, 15 miles north of the Mason-Dixon line. This is the home of Harry Truman and Brad Pitt. I lived briefly in Tempe Arizona then spent my 20s in Santa Barbara, California, then moved to Connecticut in 1989.

Educational Background/past work experience:
University of California at Santa Barbara: 1981 Bachelors of Arts in Liberal Studies. 1987 State of California Teaching Certification in English University of Connecticut: 1988 Connecticut Writing Project. 1991-1992 Cleveland Humanities in Education Summer Institute. Wesleyan University, Masters in Social Science Thesis: Native American Thought and Practice.

Greatest Accomplishments/Capstone experiences:
Oh my, there are so many... hmmm, being a husband and father. Learning to roll a kayak in white water, traveling throughout Mexico for 3 months on $150 and a library card, working in the grape harvest in Bordeux, exploring the medina in fez, morocco, taking school groups in lots of adventures...

Why do you work for TMW?
I have been teaching in one way or another for my whole professional life. I believe being outside benefits everyone in innumerable ways. Working at TMW provides me a vehicle to encourage kids to get outside, get dirty, have fun, and learn to appreciate the amazing world around them.

What is your next great adventure?
Raising my 3 year-old son, Will. Hopefully I will instill some of the love of the outdoors in him I learned through being out with my father.

Jon Lasser




Where were you born? Where have you lived since then?
I was born in New York City, and grew up in Cortlandt Manor, NY. I currently live in Branchville, CT.

Greatest Accomplishments/Capstone experiences:
A 16-day canoe expedition through big bend national park, on the Rio Grande River. The river flooded 15 feet in 1 hour, and we were able to experience the river in it's true form.

Why do you work for TMW?
More than anything, I believe in the importance of these experiences in people's lives. When I came to The Mountain Workshop I was fulfilling a dream to inspire my level of love and stewardship (for the outdoors) in other people. My dream has now developed into a passion, as has my love for this company grown so much. As I now have an opportunity to have a more substantial role here, my passion for this field is only growing.

What is your next great adventure?
I am taking my adventures indoors to the classroom this winter to finish my degree.

Susan Friedrich




Where were you born? Where have you lived since then?
I was born in Indiana, PA, a small town in the heart of Pittsburgh Steeler country. Corporate transfers had me completing “change of address” cards every few years until I landed in Ridgefield, CT 8 years ago.

Educational Background/past work experience:
BS in Education (Music concentration) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. MBA (Accounting concentration) from Western Michigan University CPA certification in Michigan.

I began my career as an instrumental music teacher before moving into the business world. As an accountant, I worked in a variety of jobs from public accounting auditing to corporate financial reporting before coming to The Mountain Workshop. But the most important and most fulfilling job for me has been the raising of my 3 awesome kids.

Greatest Accomplishments/Capstone experiences:
In the accounting field, I climbed the highest peak so to speak, by passing the CPA exam in my first attempt.

Why do you work for TMW?
I have found working at The Mountain Workshop to be a truly life changing experience. I am grateful to be working with people who believe in their mission of building stronger kids through outdoor adventure and embracing the world in which we live.

What is your next great adventure?
To put down my pencil, log off of my computer and experience some of the fun, exciting activities that define The Mountain Workshop!
