Your interest in a Mountain Workshop program for your school says a lot about your vision of education. At The Mountain Workshop we are dedicated to developing and providing experiential education programs for schools. For 25 years The Mountain Workshop has introduced thousands of young people to the thrill and satisfaction of learning by doing in the outdoors. Currently we design programs for schools in Connecticut and Eastern New York State.
At The Mountain Workshop we like to have fun and celebrate the process of learning. By using the outdoors as our classroom, The Mountain Workshop transcends the boundaries of the traditional learning environment. Our programs challenge students to step outside their 'comfort zones' and open themselves to new experiences. First we provide the environment to learn skills necessary for success, then immediately immerse the students in the act of applying them.
Students must navigate many kinds of social and intellectual landscapes. For example, a group research project requires working as a team, setting goals, establishing priorities, collecting and analyzing information and structuring this information into a cohesive, finished piece.
Similarly, on a teambuilding program we ask students to build rafts and paddle them across a woodland lake. Like the group research project, they must analyze their task and execute a workable design together. This requires team goal setting, cooperative problem solving and effective communication. Students are successful when they work as a team collecting essential building materials and structuring them into a finished sea-worthy craft.
Teachers choose our programs because they enhance educational and social goals of their school curriculum. Students love our programs because they are fun. We stimulate creative problem solving, active participation, positive group identity, individual initiative and respect for personal differences. The Mountain Workshop instructors are dynamic outdoor education professionals committed to fostering respect for one another and the natural environment.
