Employment Opportunities at The Mountain Workshop and Trailmark Expeditions


The Mountain Workshop field leaders are responsible for safely co-leading school-aged children and teens. Successful candidates will be at least 21 years of age, possess some outdoor adventure experience, as well as have a strong enthusiasm for outdoor adventure, and for mentoring children and young adults.

TMW field-staff work hard, often have long days, challenging overnights, and full seasons of work. The job requires field-staff to be flexible, communicate well with others, have a positive attitude, and most of all, patience! You may find yourself leading trips in some of the most spectacular wilderness settings in the Northeast, Colorado, Utah, California, Washington, and Wyoming, making even the hardest day at work, well worth the amazing experience.

Additional duties include driving 12-15 passenger vans and/or shuttle buses often with boat trailers, transporting participants and equipment, completing comprehensive trip reports, assisting with packing and unpacking, organizing and cleaning equipment, before and after all programs.

Staff are hired based on their judgement, teaching skills, experience, enthusiasm, ability to learn, outdoor technical skills, group management, and facilitation skills. Candidates must demonstrate some experience in the outdoors as a pre-requisite.


Field-Staff Positions:

Instructor: (Day & Multi-Day Instructors Needed) Staff hired at an entry-level position. New instructors are generally paired with Lead Instructors who are familiar with TMW's style, program sites, and instructional techniques. New instructors also have the opportunity to participate in many valuable field-related trainings, many leading to a certification.

Lead Instructor: (Day & Multi-Day Instructors Needed) Lead staff carries the responsibility of ensuring the safety and quality of a program. Promotion to the position of Lead Instructor comes when an individual is assessed as having the skills and experience necessary to assume full responsibilty for a Mountain Workshop program. Program instructors are considered Lead when they have been with The Mountain Workshop for several years or have comparable technical, leadership, and facilitation skills from previous employment.

Rock-Climbing Specialist: (Day Programs) The rock-climbing specialist will work Awesome Adventures day programs in CT and NY. The specialist must have the ability to set-up/take-down top-rope climbing sites, teach basic climbing skills, rappelling techniques, and be able to safely manage a rock-climbing site. The rock specialist will participate in an AMGA certified top-rope course in the spring.

Programs:

Schools Outdoors Programs: We have day and overnight trips for K-12 grade students that run in the spring and fall in CT, PA, UT, and NY.

Awesome Adventures Day Programs: In the summer we work with local youth ages 8-17 years old. Programs are 1 week in length and are Monday-Friday, 7am-5pm day trips that run in CT & NY.

Trailmark Wilderness Expeditions: Expeditions are 7-21 day, sleep-away trips for 11-17 year old participants that run in the summer visiting ME, NH, MA, VT, NY, CO, UT, CA, WA, and WY.

Dirt Camp: Is day and overnight trips all about Mountain Biking. The day trips are 7am-5pm Monday through Friday and the overnight trips run at Killington, VT. and are 1 week overnight, lodge based trips.

Corporate Teambuilding Programs: We work with large corporations, school teachers, and a host of other clients. TMW sets various challenges in order for companies to build teamwork, get to know each other, develop leadership skills, and just to release some positive energy in a new environment. These are full day programs that can reach as many as 250 participants.

Qualifications:

Experience working with youth and/or personal outdoor knowledge

You must be 21 years of age to apply for an Instructor position.

You must have a clean driving record & be able to attain an endorsement A on your CT license or your states equivelent (DMV & Criminal background checks will follow interview)

New hires must attend trainings that apply to their seasonal commitment

TMW's current minimum first-aid standard is: Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Wilderness First-Aid, ACA Intro to Canoe, and Waterfront Lifeguard Training. (These certifications will be offered "free of charge" for employees who commit to the 2008 season.)

Compensation:

At-Will seasonal employment

Industry competitive Per-Diem rates are based on education, seniority, and field experience

Limited employee housing available for staff who contract for a full season

Food provided on all overnight trips

TMW provides (and requires) extensive training in specific program related skills including Wilderness First-aid, CPR and Lifeguarding

They come from many different professional backgrounds including other outdoor education companies, school teachers, commercial outdoor guides, international adventure companies, YMCA's, and a host of other places.
